Rhododendron Bloom Report: June 25, 2020

Hi folks-
As you can see from some of the accompanying photos taken 6/25, there are a few early blooms this year. Maybe the hot dry weather has spurred them on. Or not. Who knows? In any case, the main show will still happen mid July. Maybe day or 2 earlier. As beautiful and wondrous as the Rhododendron maximus grove is, the blooms are a bit scarce this year. I think I said last week that perhaps last year’s magnificent bloom has caused them to take some time off from flowering. It’s all a mystery to me. As dry as it has been, the mosquitos are quite active at the Grove, so be ready!
Until next week- Ted Lenk

Another one on its way
An early start
Fully out. Way too early-always an upstart in the pack.
Closer to mid-July for blooming
Granite posts at the Trailhead
By legislated State law, no pets are allowed on the Rhododendron Loop trail, but if they are leashed at all times, they are permitted on the State owned trail that leads to the summit of Little Monadnock (M+M Trail).

  1. Thanks Ted! I have never seen these rhododendrons in their glory as I always miss the bloom every year because the garden varieties bloom so much earlier and then I forget about these wild ones by July. I’m really hoping to catch them this year and appreciate being able to refer to this blog for a status update so hopefully I can get my timing right. Thanks for the updates!
