The flower buds at Rhododendron State Park in Fitzwilliam, NH are beginning to expand a bit in some places. In the shadier spots you may see some buds that have not visibly “woken up,” but in other lighter locations some buds might show some pink color or even be opening up a little. This hot humid weather tends to speed things up a bit, but it’s often hard to predict some plant behavior.
The leaf buds have certainly grown out a lot this week, though. They won’t grow much past 6-8 inches long before the leaves fill out, and the potential for flower buds developing at their terminals will depend on what? I don’t know. Perhaps this summer’s weather? Or maybe available nutrients? There are many possibilities. Plants are so mysterious sometimes.
Ironically, sometimes too much sun can be hard on some plants, especially those that evolved to be in the shade of other plants. More light often causes more flowering though-it’s a mystery.
The Rhododendron grove in Fizwilliam, NH is always a great place to visit with or without the flowers in bloom. There are many things to see and hear if you are interested. During the summer months it is often quite buggy (it is now) so come prepared.
So…. it’s June 22 – “summer”! Still damp and cool-ish. Best guess – will flowers still be blooming a month from now, or will that be past? Thanks! ST

What type of rhododendrons are they? Most bloom in spring but what rhody blooms in July?
