Rhododendron Bloom Report: July 10, 2017

Hi folks-

Sorry about the lack of a bloom report last week – it was a busy week for all of us, what with the Fourth of July landing on a Tuesday this year.

As the photos all show, there’s a lot of range within the grove at Rhododendron State Park as far as the blossoms go. There are many out in full bloom at the same time as some are past, and some are just starting to open up. You may even see a few flower buds that have barely begun to expand (they will open up by August 1st or so).

Perhaps as a result of all the heat, humidity and thunderstorms we saw this week (it is July, after all) the rate of plant activity has increased. Does this translate into flowers popping out? Usually. Does it mean an earlier bloom? Probably not. The “early bloom” phenomenon is likely due to other factors – it is a mystery to me.

What I’m getting at here is that the grove is full of flowers now, and it will likely last through this coming weekend (7/15-16). Right on schedule (just whose schedule is that, anyway?). The middle of July.

  1. Thank you for your report Ted Lenk. We have not yet been to Rhododendron State Park while they are in bloom, so hope to get there this weekend. It is a lovely park at all times of the year! Gail Szafir Troy, NH

  2. I visited this park today with a friend, who also told me about this blog. A real jewel of the Monadnock region.
