This past weekend I decided that it was time for me to try the hike to Kinsman Mountain with the hopes of surviving the climb and also coming up with an idea for my next post. While I was pondering, I realized that I have lived in New Hampshire for nearly 7 months! That’s over […]

Living in Bear Country
I fell in love with Franconia Notch State Park from the moment I arrived. The park is full of scenic mountain trails, beautiful lakes, and an abundance of wildlife. In my time here, I have noticed that it is the wildlife, especially the large mammals, that particularly fascinates most visitors that come through. On my […]
Meet the Neighbors
I have been living in Pawtuckaway’s Big Island campground for just over a month now, and have truly fallen in love with this place, with the neighborhood if you will. On a Saturday morning I wake up to children riding their bikes past my campsite, to families getting together for a pancake breakfast, and to […]
Dry Sands & Moonlit Waters
Join me to a place of cool brisk water and gentle breezes where people can unwind to escape the summer’s heat. Unpack, relax, and meander the trails. Take in a forest redolent of conifers and blooming blueberries. Explore the Pitch Pine forests or stroll the entire circumference of the lake. After hiking, take a listen, […]
Magnificent Tales of Metallak
When I first came up to the Great North Woods to check out my new home at Umbagog Lake State Park, I got on a pontoon boat for a tour of the water. One of the first stops on our tour was Dutton’s Island, named after Mr. Dutton who built a mansion in the middle […]
10,000 Acre Backyard
Never in my life, would I have imagined that I would find myself calling 10,000 acres in New Hampshire “home”. But that’s exactly what Bear Brook State Park has become, my home, at least for a little while. I landed in Manchester’s airport in early January, off of a flight that was many hours late. […]
Little Spots Form a Beautiful Tapestry
Step off the beaten track this Fourth of July weekend! Yes, beaches are lovely this time of the year, aren’t they? And while there are over 20 NH State Parks where you can swim, build sand castles or work on your tan ~ Perhaps it’s time to take a step back, dip into the shade […]
If I can do it…
Upon arriving in Franconia Notch State Park as newly initiated Discover the Power of Parks interpretive rangers, we had several days to explore our new surroundings before beginning our programming. Before I even moved to Franconia Notch with Becki (my fellow FNSP Interpreter) I heard that the Lonesome Lake was definitely something to see. So […]
Beauty in the Details
“Reading about nature is fine, but if a person walks in the woods and listens carefully, he can learn more than what is in books, for they speak with the voice of God.” -George Washington Carver When I first visited Franconia Notch State Park, it was clouded in fog. So, I was pleasantly surprised when […]
Peace & Tranquility at Lake Francis
by Caleb Savage, Interpretive Ranger at Lake Francis State Park You might as well leave your cell phone devices at home. Why you might ask? Well, when you enter the Great North Woods (Grand Bois du Nord) the vast magnitude of wilderness will along prevent you from making any phone calls. When I first entered […]
